Urban homesteaders

Well in the first exciting news: Moo grew two inches in the last six months! (according to the WIC lady). And he got new shoes (two sizes bigger than the old ones). AND he got a new 'big boy' car seat!

Pretty exciting to be three (and a little dirty)!
Then on Thursday Aunt Wanda and Uncle Daryl from Idaho came to stay for a night on their 'Around Utah Adventure." It was great to see them, and as always, you never have enough time to discuss everything! And on top of just generally being supportive, loving and awesome, they brought us two HUGE boxes of apples from their tree. YUM!!
Josh made all the sauce - TWO batches!!
Then we got busy and did THREE batches of apple pie filling!! It was very satisfying to be canning away all our yummy food for the winter season. We also enjoyed the grape juice from our very own grapes with our guests. Yum again!

On Friday morning we watch Bugs' kids while she helps as school. Now my new plan is that after that, Josh and I drop Moo at Kellie's (because I watch her kids on crazy-busy-Wednesday) while Josh and  I go on a lunch-date! Friday we went to a new local Mexican place and then...we went and bought more fruit trees!! Yep, it was snowing all day and COLD and I bargained down the nursery owner to get THREE trees for like $75!!! WHAT A DEAL!!
So on Saturday we planted them.

Our new Pink Lady apple tree - we plan to espalier it (like the pear tree). Here is Josh getting ready to plant the next one:
Our peach tree: early Elberta.  Peach trees do not espalier well. Also they need southern light to ripen the fruit. So we put it in the corner of the yard. I think we will stake it to help against the wind. We plan to put another one about 20 feet away - two baby orchards in our yard!
AND we got a FIG tree/bush!! It is inside because it has baby figs that we might be able to harvest this year!!
They turn purple and then you harvest them:
We will plan this one on Monday. We were TIRED on Saturday. AND we watched both sessions of General Conference!!
So on Sunday we took it more easy. Cleaning out the puzzles and putting them together:

Ok, on the government shut down front. Josh is fine. He is a contractor and is still being paid and is working from home, since his workplace is closed. Last week he analyzed some data and created a mini-weather station (now in the garden for testing). I am off to fix up the conference stuff for the kiddos. Happy week!
