So Michael and I have it all planned out to go horseback riding at Shirene;'s. We change clothes and motor over and the horses are waiting. So we brush them and put the saddles on. Then she comes out and we talk a bit. Then she leaves (everyone is saddled up). I put Michael on a horse and he has my horse by its reins.
He said, "Mom, I forgot my helmet." So I go back to get it. His horse gets spooked. It is running. I say 'Yell Whoa!" The horse does not stop (his name is Larry, we hate Larry now). Michael, in a picture perfect move, gets bucked off. I am running like mad. He hits the fence with his arm. He hits the rock at the bottom with his head.
I get there. He is unconscious. I yell, Michael! He wakes up with a start. His arm hurts, his hip hurts. I am calling 911. He rolls over. I talk to him. He is responding. Did you know now that when you call 911 (since I am getting to be an expert here), it comes up with the address you are calling from? So that was good. I can hear the sirens. They are driving back and forth on the road, looking for the entrance to the house.
I tell Michael about all the things that are going to happen next. Like 9 EMS people show up. I am too busy looking at Michael. There is even a DOCTOR there! He is working on a fellowship in EMS. The big fire truck is there. There are sheriff's deputies.
They get him a neck brace. They put him on the backboard. They lift him up into the ambulance. I get in the front. Shirene is freaking out. I tell her is it ok. Michael tells her it is ok.
Michael says to me, "Mom, I am glad it was me getting hurt and not you, because you are old and wouldn't heal up."
We get to the ER. Apparently we are listed as Trauma 1 case because we are there, in X-ray, in CT scans, faster than you can say boo. We have to cut off the jeans because his hip hurts too bad to pull them down for the scan.
The neck brace gets to come off. We are looking at a broken elbow (right off the growth plate - but that is fine, still in place and still undisturbed). We get sodas. Michael gets a temporary cast. He gets released (less than four hours start to finish). We get in the van, which they dropped off for us, and drive home.
That is the story. Two days later we go to the ortho doc and get a real cast. It is water proof! It is tie dye! We need to get another sling tonight so his arm is not falling off having to carry the cast around. It will be off in four weeks (more than that and they find it is sometimes hard to get complete range of motion back).
So many miracles. Thank you to those who pray 'for people to be safe' because we certainly were protected.
